Server Virtualization and Optimization at HSBCPresenter:
HSBC BankHSBC in the UK has grown its virtual infrastructure over the last 3 years to 1,600 VMs on 350 ESX Server hosts with capacity for an additional 2,000 VMs. Over a fourth of our Windows systems are now virtual with the majority of new servers being deployed as VMs. We employ two tiers of servers to maximize VM density, deploying VMs to either clusters of 4-way servers on a SAN or to blades with local storage. With environmental and data center migration issues driving consolidation, we have implemented VC2 into production, deployed 100 ESX Server 3 hosts (with HA and DRS), and we are in progress to upgrade all 2.x hosts to v3 including the tools used (Vizioncore esxMigrator and VMware P2V Converter).
This session will cover lessons learned while migrating to VMware Infrastructure 3 and defining and mandating virtualization standards across the HSBC Group. While the technical standards are important, the operational framework and global standardization are critical to delivering virtualization as a shared global resource.
