VM automatically shuts down after P2V

VM automatically shuts down after P2V

Dear All,

I recently installed VMware ESXi 4.0 and hot cloned a Poweredge Dell 800 (2 DCs) and 2600 (1 File server) using VMware converter 4.0 but when I power on the VM they all shut down by themself, I have disabled some adpters including the NIC but still the same thing.

I also tried ESXi 3.5 and VMware converter 3.0 with similar results. These servers have reached its end of life and needs to be retired since one of the drives failed once.

Please any link, suggestions on how to fix these will be highly appreciated.

First of all you should never P2V a DC.  Create a new one and just replicate your AD info.  Decommission the old ones.  Kerberos and replication issues can occur.  Simple and safe!  This is directly from VMware “If the source is a domain controller, special considerations must be made. VMware does not recommend virtualizing an active domain controller with Converter.”

For your machine shutting down it sounds like a driver issue maybe?  Try going into safemode and remove all drivers that VMware does not need.  Use the following command on the server in question:SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1    Remove anything not needed or no longer in use.  Same goes for software.

Hope that helps some.
